Goals

The project goal in St. Petersburg is the development of the methods for the creating smart, attractive, green and accessible public spaces for the urban community and its realization in the pilot municipal districts.

Methods and Projects Scope

Jan Gehl Architect Studio “Gehl Architects” become the key partner of the project from the Nordic countries. The main approach of Jan Gehl methodology is “cities for people”, when design of the city space is formed in accordance with the demands and active urban community participation, increasing the work efficiency of the space.

The project is divided into 4 parts and each of them has its own task:

  • The first part is oriented on the transferring of the “Nordic” experience and knowledge to the national and municipal authorities and their active involving in the project;

  • The second part is oriented on the modelling particular open public spaces on the pilot areas considering the new approach;

  • The third part is connected with the development of the libraries, making them contemporary public spaces, which attract visitors and become the basis for the city space development;

  • The fourth part is aimed on the development of the cross-discipline education programme model for creating the new spaces.


Project Results


The main result of the project is a book “SAGA Book – Public Spaces in Transformation”. The book is a more than just the project report. It is an attempt to suggest the complex approach and methodology in planning the public spaces in Russian cities that allows turning to planning the desirable social processes. The first part of the book tells about SAGA project in St. Petersburg, the other three parts describe different researches in their types and scales, and the last one presents some project ideas for some public spaces in St. Petersburg.

The prototype of the SAGABOOK was the “recipe book” or “manual”. The main difference is that the direct instructions are changed by the experience description, which was gained within the project implementation. The book also contains some instructions and recommendations.
