Annual Leontief Conferences
Background
The idea to carry out Leontief Readings occurred to honor memory of one of the greatest economist, Nobel Prize winner – Wassily W. Leontief, whose name was given to the Research Centre. Carnegie Moscow Centre approved that idea and, by joint efforts, the first Leontief Conference dated for Wassily Leontief Commemoration and devoted to summarizing of the decade of economic reforms in Russia was carried out in February 2000 in St. Petersburg. The Conference was held successfully. It got public resonance and demonstrated the relevance of such events. As a result of the first Conference the initiators decided to carry out Leontief Readings annually.
Conference Main Aims and Targeted Audience
There is an annual tradition in February of every year to organize the conference which joints together lead world and Russian scientists, politicians, experts, specialists, journalists dealing with actual problems of Russian development, with the purpose of discussion and presentation of their own vision on actual political, social and economic problems of Russia reforming (summarizing of results and perspectives of further developments). Main targeted audience of the Conference is scientific and business society of St. Petersburg and North-West of Russia.
Electronic magazine Leontief Readings: Actual Problems of Russian Economic Development
Taking into consideration a great interest of scientific society in Leontief Conferences it was decided in 2002 to publish electronic magazine Leontief Readings: Actual Problems of Russian Economic Development. This electronic magazine gives to a wide range of world and Russian readers an opportunity to have access to the information concerning main organizers and the Conference idea as well as visions on main problems of Russian economic development.

The Programme of X Annual Conference "Economic Thought: Variety of Concepts and Applications" involved three sessions: Economic Analysis and Economic Theory, Institutions: Theory and Practice, The Austrian School of Economics: an Alternative Vision of the World.On February 19, 2011 in the Main Dining Room of the Mikhailovsky Castle V Award Ceremony of International Leontief Medal laureates 2010 for Contribution to Economic Reforms" took place.

Economy and Institutions
On February 12-13, 2010 the IX Annual Conference from the series of Leontief Readings "Economy and Institutions" was held.
Organizers: Government of St Petersburg, ICSER Leontief Center. General Media Partner - Expert North-West, Media Partners - the Newspaper Business Petersburg, St Petersburg Online Newspaper Fontanka.ru, the Magazine Finance and Business, Journal Economic Policy.
The Conference Programme included following parallel section meetings: “INSTITUTIONAL CHANGES IN RUSSIAN FEDERATION”, “INSTITUTIONS AND DEVELOPMENT PROBLEMS”, “INSTITUTIONAL ANALYSIS AS EVOLUTION AND EXPANSION OF ECONOMICS”. In the framework of the plenary sessions a wide range of issues was discussed: features of institutions, the likely prospects for institutional change and institutional reform in Russia, the role of institutions as obstacles and sources of development and modernization in the history and the modern world, problems and perspectives of institutional economicsIts place and significance in economic thought.
The Conference was completed by the Ceremony of Rewarding Laureates 2009 with the International Leontief Medal “For Contribution to Economic Reforms”.
2009
Economics and Law
On February 27-28, 2009 the VIII Annual Conference from the series of Leontief Readings "Economics and Law" was held.
Organizers and sponsors: St Petersburg City Administration, Evrofinance Mosnarbank Joint Stock Company, ICSER Leontief Centre.
General information partner – Expert North-West magazine, information partner – Delovoy Peterburg Newspaper.
The Conference Programme included following parallel section meetings: “Economics, Law, and Transformation of the Russian Society”, “Economic Analysis of Law and Criminal Conduct”, “Economy Legal and Illegal”. In the framework of the plenary sessions a wide range of issues was discussed, from the role of law in social-economic transformation of Russia to economic approach to legal norms interpretation and to defining legal and illegal constituents of modern economic systems.
The Conference was completed by the Ceremony of Rewarding Laureates 2008 with the International Leontief Medal “For Contribution to Economic Reforms”.
2007
Economic Theory and History
On the 5-6 of October, 2007 the VII Annual Conference from the series of Leontief Readings "Economic Theory and History" was held. Conference Organizers: International Centre for Social and Economic Research Leontief Centre, RAO UES of Russia, Sberbank of Russia, Bankers House St.Petersburg, KIT Finance Investment Bank. The Programme included two Plenary Sessions: Russia on the Eve of the New Century: Break-troughs and Failures of Economic Reforms and Property and Authority: Large Transformation at the Beginning of the XXI Century, tree Sectional Sessions, led during the conference, were united by common subject Economic Reforms: Plans and Results and devoted to the discussion of the mainstreams and primary results of reforms, carried out in the key fields of national economy. Subjects of the Sectional Sessions are: Economic Reforms: Plans And Results, Economic Reforms: Plans and Results: Whether The Natural Monopolies are Being Reformed?, Economic Reforms: Plans And Results: Social Package: The Issues of Reforming Social Sector and presentation of the multi-author book of the Independent Institute for Social Policy (IISP) “Review of the Social Policy in Russia. The Beginning of the 2000’s”. The work of the second conference day was opened by the Round Table Session Economic Thought and Economic History was held. And also the Ceremony of Rewarding Laureates 2007 with the International Leontief Medal “For Contribution to Economic Reforms” was held.
2006
Problems of Economic Theory and Policy
On the 29-30 of September, 2006 the VI Annual Conference from the series of Leontief Readings “Problems of Economic Theory and Policy” was held. Conference Organizers: International Centre for Social and Economic Research Leontief Centre, Saint-Ptersburg Government, RAO UES of Russia. The Programme included four parallel section meetings: “Economic Policy”, “Demographic Transition and Social Policy”, “Wassily Leontiefs Works and Modern Mathematical Economics” and “Transformation of Institutions”. On the second Conference day a Solemn Session devoted to Wassily Leontief Centenary was held.
2005
Actual Problems of Russian Economic Development
On the 10-11 of February the V Annual Conference from the series of Leontief Readings "Actual Problems of Russian Economic Development" was held in St. Petersburg. Conference Organizers: International Centre for Social and Economic Research Leontief Centre (St. Petersburg), Carnegie Moscow Centre, Center for Strategic Research (Moscow), Association of Russian Economic Think Tanks (Moscow), in cooperation with RAO UES of Russia (Moscow) and YUSITEK (Moscow). Information Agency RosBalt provided information support of the Conference.
Conference Programme included three main sessions: session Trends of Structural Reforms in Russia during which problems and trends of reforming of social sphere, natural monopolies, administrative system, including the system of local government were discussed; session Economy of the State and Law which was organized in cooperation with the Institute of National Project “Public Contract”; regional session Territories Development: Problems of Regional and Local Economic Policy and Control. The Conference was carried out on the threshold of Wassily Leontief Centenary.
2003
Globalization: Russia and St. Petersburg in Changeable World
IV Annual Conference from the series of Leontief Readings "Globalization: Russia and St. Petersburg in the Changeable World" was carried out on the 21-22 of February 2003. Conference Organizers: Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of the Russian Federation, Carnegie Moscow Center, Swedish Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation, International Bank of St. Petersburg, and International Centre for Social and Economic Research Leontief Centre (St. Petersburg) in cooperation with the Investment Projects Centre (St. Petersburg Administration). Main aim of the Conference was to discuss most important problems of Russia development including consequences of Russia’s accession to the WTO, place and role of St. Petersburg in conditions of globalization, relations between Russia and the European Union, middle class in Russia.
2002
"Russian Economy: Current Reform Issues"
III Annual Conference from the series of Leontief Readings "The Russian Economy: Current Reform Issues" was held on the 8-9 of February 2002 in St. Petersburg (St. Petersburg Administration, Committee on Construction, Hall of Investment Projects). Conference Organizers: Carnegie Moscow Center, Swedish Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation, International Centre for Social and Economic Research Leontief Centre. Joint Engineering Enterprise provided the Conference with financial support. Main discussion themes were pension reform, relations between Russia and the European Union in the framework of Northern Dimension Programme, deregulation of economy and investment climate.
2001
"Russian Economy: Current Reform Issues"
II Annual Conference from the series of Leontief Readings "The Russian Economy: Current Reform Issues" was carried out on the 23-24 of February 2001. Conference organizers: Carnegie Moscow Center, Swedish Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation, International Centre for Social and Economic Research Leontief Centre, Foundation Center for Strategic Research North-West. Main aim of the Conference was to discuss forthcoming economic reforms in Russia. Main discussion themes were connected this reforming of social sphere, taxation system, reforms suggested at regional level as well as problems between the European Union and Russia.
2000
«Lessons of Transition: a Decade of Russian Economic Reforms»
I Annual Conference from the series of Leontief Readings "Lessons of Transition: a Decade of Russian Economic Reforms" was dated for Wassily Leontief Commemoration and was carried out in February 2000. Carnegie Moscow Centre and International Centre for Social and Economic Research Leontief Centre organized the Conference. It was devoted to summarizing of the decade of economic reforms in Russia.
From 2009 to June 2015 Conferences of Leontief Readings were funded by the Endowment association ANO "ICSER Leontief Centre".
