2025-08-06 :: We celebrate the 120th anniversary of the great economist’s birth at the memorial building on Zhdanovskaya Street.

On August 5, a flower-laying ceremony was held in St. Petersburg at the memorial plaque to Vasily Vasilyevich Leontief at 43 Zhdanovskaya Street. The event was timed to coincide with the 120th anniversary of the birth of the eminent economist and Nobel Prize laureate.

The ceremony was attended by staff and experts from the Leontief Center, established in the early 1990s on Leontief’s initiative. Since its founding, the center has maintained ties with the great scientist and the scientific traditions he established.

The house on Zhdanovskaya Street is one of the few surviving addresses in St. Petersburg directly connected to Leontief’s St. Petersburg period. The building, built by his grandfather, became the family home where Vasily spent his childhood and youth. Later, when visiting his homeland, he always tried to stop by here.

A memorial plaque was installed on this house in honor of the great scientist’s 100th birthday. Since then, the Leontief Center has established a tradition: every year on Leontief’s birthday, staff and friends gather at the house to lay flowers and reminisce about personal encounters, letters, and warm associations with Leontief, which continued until his death in 1999.
