2022-08-17 :: R.M. Voronkova discussed the development of the Russian Arctic

On August 15, Researcher of the ICSER Leontief Center, Director for Spatial Development of the Consortium Leontief Center - AV Group R.M. Voronkova, as part of the business program of the Moscow Urban Forum 2022, took part in the panel discussion “The Shrinking Arctic. Depopulation of Russian cities in the Arctic - a verdict or a new challenge?

The audience was presented with the research of the Consortium in terms of the spatial development of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug: approaches to adapting the region’s settlement system in conditions of strong depopulation and significant costs for the maintenance of small settlements, urban environment management policies taking into account the development cycles of the district’s cities.

 

The discussion touched upon painful questions regarding the long-term planning of the Arctic territories, namely, is it possible to change approaches to the development of strategic documents for the development of depopulating territories and overcome ignoring the compression cycle?
