2017-04-08 :: The Seminar-Dialogue "Green Mobility – Towards Clean, Healthy and Accessible Environment" was held in Kaliningrad

On April 6-8, 2017 Kaliningrad was visited by Russian and foreign experts under international cooperation project between Nordic countries and North-West Russia Green Mobility to present and share the best solutions in development of cycling culture and infrastructure, non-motorised modes of transport, sustainable urban development.

On April 6 during the city bicycle tour experts have visited the main city facilities and studied the existing infrastructure, including road intersections and junctions. The experts noted that some sections of city bicycle paths are made according to European standards, but there are areas requiring drastic transformation. The main goal is to create a single network of connected bicycle paths allowing people to move around the city using bicycle as a vehicle.

On April 7, 2017 a seminar-dialogue "Green Mobility - Towards Clean, Healthy and Accessible Environment" was held in the creative space "Sackheim Gate" where participants have discussed the important challenges of organization of sustainable transportation systems, mobility management of people in cities, improving the overall quality of life and urban environment.

The seminar gathered over 50 participants – representatives of regional and city authorities, international Green Mobility experts from Denmark, Norway and Finland, Russian Green Mobility representatives from St. Petersburg, Moscow, Irkutsk, Pskov, universities, local cycling activists and cycling communities, as well as interested stakeholders and mass media.

On April 8, 2017 the Project experts have studied the development prospects of the Curonian Spit as a part of the international highway EuroVelo-10 (Russia-Poland-Lithuania). The Lithuanian part of the Curonian Spit is lacking about 15 km of the bicycle paths (from Nida to the border with Kaliningrad region, Russia); Poland has built lots of bicycle paths leading to Western Europe while the Russian part hasn’t built it yet. Integration of the Kaliningrad region in international EuroVelo will highly increases the tourist attractiveness of the region.

Seminar organizers: ICSER Leontief Centre, Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation, Nordic Council of Ministers, Kaliningrad Regional Economic Development Agency and UNDP/GEF - Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation "Reducing GHG Emissions from Road Transport in Russia’s Cities".
